iPhone 18 Pro to Get Smaller Dynamic Island in First Redesign Since 2022

Key Takeaways

  • iPhone 18 Pro to feature a smaller Dynamic Island, the first redesign since its 2022 debut.
  • Enhanced camera system with 24MP front sensor, variable aperture, and new Samsung image sensor.
  • Powered by A20 Pro chip on 2nm process with custom 5G modem and satellite 5G support.
  • Expected launch in fall 2026 alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

Apple is planning the first major redesign of the Dynamic Island for the iPhone 18 Pro in 2026, four years after its introduction. According to analyst reports, the company will shrink the screen cutout rather than adopting a hole-punch design.

Design and Display Changes

The smaller Dynamic Island will be accompanied by a revised back glass cutout. Leaks suggest Apple is using a new manufacturing process to create a smoother transition between the glass and aluminium frame.

New colour options are expected, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max may become thicker to accommodate a larger battery. These design changes will likely apply to both Pro models.

Camera System Upgrades

The front camera is expected to increase to 24MP resolution. The primary rear camera could feature a new three-stack image sensor from Samsung with variable aperture technology.

A variable aperture system adjusts the lens opening to optimize light intake in different conditions. Apple is also simplifying the Camera Control by removing capacitive functions, relying solely on pressure sensitivity.

Performance and Connectivity

The iPhone 18 Pro will run on the A20 Pro chip, Apple’s first processor built on TSMC’s 2nm process for improved performance and efficiency. A custom “C2” chip will replace Qualcomm’s 5G modem, with mmWave 5G support planned for US models.

Apple is reportedly developing support for satellite-based 5G networks, moving beyond traditional ground tower connectivity.

Launch Timeline

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are scheduled for fall 2026 release, potentially alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18 models and iPhone Air 2 are expected in spring 2027.
