Apple Developing 5 New Satellite Features for Future iPhones

Key Takeaways

  • Apple developing five major satellite features for future iPhones
  • Enhanced connectivity for messaging, navigation, and indoor use
  • iPhone 18 series to support 5G NTN for better satellite coverage
  • Potential SpaceX partnership could enable premium satellite services

Apple is reportedly developing five significant satellite-based features for upcoming iPhones, expanding beyond the emergency services introduced with iPhone 14. These enhancements promise to transform how users stay connected in areas without cellular coverage.

Five New Satellite Features in Development

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is building a satellite API that would allow developers to integrate satellite connections into their own applications. Implementation will depend on individual app makers, with not all services being compatible with this system.

The company is working to bring satellite connectivity to Apple Maps, enabling navigation without requiring a SIM card or Wi-Fi access. This could prove invaluable for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Apple is also developing improved satellite messaging that supports photo transmission, moving beyond the current text-only limitations. Users will be able to share visual information from remote locations.

One of the most practical improvements addresses the current requirement to point iPhones toward the sky. The new system would maintain connectivity even when devices are in pockets, cars, or indoors.

Gurman confirmed The Information’s earlier report that the iPhone 18 series will feature 5G NTN support, allowing cell towers to tap into satellites for enhanced coverage.

Potential SpaceX Partnership

Apple currently relies on Globalstar’s satellite network, but the company is exploring a potential sale with SpaceX as a possible purchaser. Most of Apple’s planned features would require significant upgrades to Globalstar’s infrastructure.

Apple’s strategy involves owning core features offered at no cost, while advanced capabilities might require payments to carriers like SpaceX for direct connectivity. A potential SpaceX-Globalstar merger could create both complications and opportunities for deeper collaboration.

While Apple has no current plans to support satellite phone calls, video calls, or web browsing, SpaceX is reportedly advancing aggressively in these areas. This suggests potential for future expanded services through partnership.
