Last year, Apple introduced iOS 26, bringing a liquid glass design to devices from the iPhone 11 up to the iPhone 17 series. Now, the Cupertino-based tech giant has confirmed it is preparing to roll out iOS 26.5, which is expected to introduce a key RCS upgrade to the Messages app. As for the timeline, the update could arrive as early as next week, especially with iOS 27 — expected to bring major changes — just around the corner, likely to be unveiled at WWDC 2026 starting June 8.
According to the company’s release notes, the update will add end-to-end encryption for RCS conversations in the Messages app, although the feature will initially be available in beta and limited to supported carriers. The rollout is expected to take place gradually. Apple is also expected to publish a list of compatible carriers ahead of the public release of iOS 26.5.
Apart from RCS messaging, the update would bring two more additions. It includes a new Pride Luminance wallpaper that dynamically refracts a spectrum of colours and is available for download. Additionally, the Maps app will gain a Suggested Places feature, offering recommendations based on what’s trending nearby as well as your recent searches.
iOS 26 introduced a major visual refresh along with a host of functional upgrades across the system. One of the standout changes was the new “liquid glass” design language, visible across the Lock Screen and Home Screen, where elements feel more dynamic and responsive. Apple also expanded its AI push with Apple Intelligence features such as Genmoji creation, Image Playground for custom visuals, and Live Translation across Messages, FaceTime, and calls.
Beyond this, iOS 26 brought meaningful updates to everyday apps and experiences. Messages gained better filtering for unknown senders, customizable chat backgrounds, and new group features like polls and Apple Cash integration. Photos and Maps were redesigned for better navigation, with Maps now learning user preferences and offering proactive route suggestions. Additional improvements include updates to Wallet with smarter boarding passes, the introduction of Digital ID in select regions, and a new Preview app for managing documents. Accessibility features, journaling tools, and CarPlay enhancements further round out the update.
