IIT-BHU Grad Builds Emotional AI That Sings and Whispers

Key Takeaways

  • 25-year-old Sparsh Agrawal built Luna AI, a speech-to-speech model with emotional intelligence
  • Outperforms global systems with 50% lower latency and more natural speech
  • Developed without big tech or VC funding using borrowed resources
  • Already generating interest from automakers, gaming platforms, and consumer AI companies

Jaipur-based entrepreneur Sparsh Agrawal, 25, has developed one of the world’s first speech-to-speech foundational AI models capable of singing, whispering, and responding with emotional intelligence. Built without big tech or venture capital support, Luna AI represents a breakthrough in Indian AI innovation.

How Luna AI Works Differently

Unlike conventional voice systems that convert speech to text and back, Luna processes audio directly to generate lifelike speech. This approach enables faster, more natural conversations with genuine emotional awareness.

“Luna’s design allows it to whisper, adjust tone, and even sing, offering an interaction that feels ‘more human than machine’,” Agrawal explained.

Recognition and Industry Support

The young founder recently met Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who praised the innovation. On social media platform X, Agrawal announced: “Where is India’s AI? Every WhatsApp group, every conference hallway, every founder call asks the same question. Today, we’re sharing the answer. Meet Luna, world’s first speech-to-speech foundational AI model to unify audio, music and speech.”

Performance Benchmarks

Early tests show Luna outperforms global systems like OpenAI’s GPT-4 TTS and ElevenLabs, offering 50% lower latency and more natural-sounding speech.

The Resourceful Journey

“I didn’t have a research lab or a USD 100 million runway,” Agrawal revealed. “I borrowed GPUs, cloud credits, and even took on credit card debt to build Luna. This is proof that world-class technology can come from India – built with resourcefulness, not just resources.”

Team and Backing

Agrawal, an IIT-BHU graduate, leads a team including Nitish Kartik, Apoorv Singh and Pratyush Kumar. Pixa AI is backed by prominent investors including Kunal Shah, Kunal Kapoor, and Nikhil Kamath, aiming to position Luna as the “voice layer” for global entertainment, wellness, and automotive ecosystems.

Industry Response

HCL co-founder and Padma Bhushan awardee Ajai Chowdhry praised the achievement: “Sparsh has created an amazing product..India’s first!”

Sudarshan Kamath, founder of smallest.ai, added: “Truly amazing deep tech founders building silently from India! We need to back more people like Sparsh who understand how AI works and are willing to think from first principles.”

Agrawal, selected as the only solo founder from over 15,000 applicants to the WTFund, sees Luna’s creation as part of his mission to establish India as a hub for emotionally intelligent AI innovation.
