Major AWS Outage Disrupts Snapchat, Venmo, and Reddit Globally

Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a major global outage on Monday, disrupting popular apps like Snapchat, Venmo, and Reddit. While Amazon declared the issue “fully mitigated,” residual errors continued to affect millions of users worldwide.

Key Takeaways

  • AWS outage caused by a DNS issue in the US-East-1 region.
  • Snapchat, Venmo, Reddit, and dozens of other platforms were affected.
  • Service was “fully mitigated” by 6:35 AM ET, but some disruptions continued.

What Caused the AWS Outage?

The root cause was an “underlying DNS issue.” The Domain Name System, which translates website names to IP addresses, failed in the US-East-1 (North Virginia) region, a core AWS hub. This triggered global ripple effects.

By 6:35 AM Eastern Time, AWS announced the outage was “fully mitigated” and most operations had resumed. However, engineers later noted some services were still “experiencing elevated errors.”

Major Platforms Affected

Downdetector reported widespread user issues across:

  • Social & Communication: Snapchat, WhatsApp, Signal, Reddit, Pinterest
  • Entertainment & Gaming: Apple TV, YouTube, Roblox, Fortnite, Xbox
  • Productivity & Lifestyle: Zoom, Canva, Duolingo, Strava, Peloton

Flickr confirmed it was “temporarily unavailable due to a major issue affecting Amazon Web Services.”

AWS Response and Recovery

AWS provided ongoing technical updates, stating:

“We continue to observe recovery across all AWS services.”

Progress was noted across multiple “Availability Zones in the US-East-1 Regions.” For Lambda and SQS services, the company addressed residual network connectivity issues by adjusting polling rates.

By 8 AM ET, AWS downgraded the outage status from “degraded” to “impacted” as engineers worked to clear a backlog of delayed requests.

Expert Analysis on Severity

Cybersecurity expert Oli Buckley, a professor at Loughborough University, called the incident “extremely significant.”

“What we’re seeing this morning is a major outage at AWS, centred on the US-East-1 region in Virginia, which has spread out across the globe, impacting a lot of different websites, apps and services that we rely on,” Buckley said.

He explained that a DNS issue prevents systems from finding the correct server, causing them to slow down and eventually stop trying.

“This outage is extremely significant because AWS is a backbone for much of the internet’s infrastructure. It’s a really stark reminder of how many well-known services rely on a handful of providers and services themselves.”

Why This is a Global Concern

The outage highlights the internet’s heavy dependence on a few major cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. A single fault can cascade across fintech, entertainment, communication, and retail sectors.

Since AWS powers back-end systems for thousands of global businesses, even brief disruptions lead to significant financial and operational losses.

What Happens Next?

AWS engineers report that full stability is returning, though temporary performance slowdowns may persist. The company has not yet released a detailed post-mortem on the technical cause or prevention measures.

As Professor Buckley noted, this event serves as a critical reminder of the concentrated nature of modern digital infrastructure.
