AWS Global Outage Resolved After Disrupting Major Services
Amazon has confirmed its AWS cloud services are largely back online after a massive global outage that disrupted thousands of websites, apps, and digital platforms worldwide. While systems have been restored, some users continue to experience residual delays as services stabilize.
Key Services Affected
- Social media and communication: Snapchat, Facebook
- Gaming platforms: Fortnite, Roblox
- Streaming services: Disney+, Hulu
- Airlines: Delta Air Lines, United Airlines
- Financial services: Coinbase and other crypto platforms
- AI services: Perplexity AI
- Smart home devices connected to Amazon’s ecosystem
Root Cause Identified
The outage began overnight and was traced to a critical DNS (Domain Name System) failure. AWS confirmed “significant error rates for requests” at 1:26 AM ET (10:56 AM IST). DNS acts as the internet’s address directory, converting web domains into numerical IP addresses that servers understand.
Though user data remained secure throughout the incident, the DNS failure prevented access to applications by separating them from their back-end systems.
Resolution and Recovery
Amazon resolved the DNS problem by 6:35 AM ET (4:05 PM IST) and recommended that affected businesses clear their caches – temporary storage used to speed up services – to fully restore operations.
The widespread disruption highlights the critical dependency of modern digital services on cloud infrastructure and the cascading effects when major providers experience technical issues.
