AI Startup’s $1B Valuation Built on “Fake” $100/Month Product

Fireflies.ai co-founder Sam Udotong has revealed the company’s first AI notetaker product, priced at $100 per month, was completely manual – with founders personally taking notes for customers to validate demand before building the actual technology.

The “Fred from Fireflies.ai” Operation

Udotong disclosed on LinkedIn that he and his co-founder personally attended customer meetings, quietly took notes, and sent them to customers while operating under the pseudonym “Fred from Fireflies.ai.” During this period in 2017, they were financially struggling and living wherever they could find accommodation.

The co-founder described this unconventional strategy as “validation before automation” – focusing on proving market demand and generating revenue before developing the real AI technology that would eventually help the startup reach a $1 billion valuation.
