Meta Lays Off 600 Employees From Superintelligence Labs After Aggressive Hiring Spree
Meta has announced layoffs of 600 employees from its Superintelligence Labs division, just weeks after making headlines for offering $100 million-plus compensation packages to recruit top AI researchers.
Aggressive Talent Acquisition Backfires
The company had initiated an intense talent war in Silicon Valley, poaching AI engineers from rivals including Google, Apple, and OpenAI with multi-million-dollar salary offers. CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally led efforts to recruit from top research labs, dangling unprecedented compensation packages.
Meta’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, confirmed the job cuts in a memo obtained by Business Insider.
“By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact,” Wang wrote.
A Meta spokesperson has officially confirmed the layoffs affecting the Superintelligence Labs unit.
