Wolves shock Liverpool with stoppage-time strike

Liverpool F. C. suffered a shocking 2–1 defeat against bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers F. C. at Molineux on Tuesday.

Wolves took the lead late in the game when Rodrigo Gomes scored in the 78th minute. Liverpool responded quickly, with Mohamed Salah ending his long goal drought by equalising in the 83rd minute — his first Premier League goal since November.

However, deep into stoppage time, Andre scored his first goal for Wolves after pouncing on a poor clearance from Alisson Becker. His shot deflected off Joe Gomez and flew into the net, sealing a dramatic win for the league’s bottom club.

It was the first time since 2017 that the team at the bottom of the Premier League defeated the reigning champions. Liverpool have also struggled late in games this season, conceding 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of matches.

The loss leaves Liverpool fifth in the table and damages their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Chelsea F.C. could overtake them with a win over Aston Villa F.C..

Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted it was a poor result and said his team has been conceding too many late goals.

“Bad result,” Slot said. “We are losing far too many football games and dropping points.

“Was it again in extra (added) time that we conceded? The three times we lost in the last 22 games were all in extra time.”

The two teams will meet again at Molineux in the FA Cup on Friday, giving Liverpool a quick chance to respond.

Slot this week said he no longer finds Premier League matches a “joy to watch” due to the rise in set-piece goals, and Liverpool supporters took no pleasure from this dismal performance.

Before the match, both sets of fans applauded in the 18th minute to honour former Wolves and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash last year.

Liverpool were punished for their lethargic performance in the 78th minute.

Tolu Arokodare got away with a nudge on Virgil van Dijk to win the ball before playing a superb pass to Rodrigo Gomes, who held off Ibrahima Konate and guided a clinical finish past Alisson Becker.

Liverpool finally awoke from their slumber after that shock, grabbing an equaliser in the 83rd minute with a helping hand from Wolves.

Wolves midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde was guilty of a woeful pass that Salah intercepted, racing into the area for a shot that eluded Jose Sa’s weak attempted save.

But Liverpool were still creaky at the back and Andre pounced on Alisson’s poor clearance four minutes to steal the points in stoppage-time.

Andre’s powerful strike deflected off Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and looped over the wrong-footed Alisson as Wolves boss Rob Edwards sprinted down the touchline in a wild celebration while Slot looked on crestfallen.

Despite the win, Wolves remain deep in relegation trouble, sitting 11 points from safety with eight games left.

Elsewhere, Everton F.C. beat Burnley F.C. 2–0 at home. James Tarkowski scored with a header in the first half, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added a second goal after the break. Everton are still pushing for a possible European spot, while Burnley remain close to relegation.

Sunderland A.F.C. defeated Leeds United F.C. 1–0 at Elland Road thanks to a penalty from Habib Diarra.

Meanwhile, AFC Bournemouth and Brentford F.C. played out a 0–0 draw, a result that did little to help either side’s hopes of qualifying for European competition.
