New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge does not often look nervous. He is one of the biggest stars in baseball but before a huge 2025 postseason game at Yankee Stadium, even he needed a steady reminder. Judge recently shared that Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper sent him a text message before the playoffs last year.
That message stayed in his head as he walked out to face the Boston Red Sox in a high-pressure game. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Judge explained how those few words changed his mindset. He said the message gave him “chills.” For a player who has won MVP awards and carried the Yankees through big moments, that text still meant something special. The moment shows that even the best players lean on each other when the stakes are high.
Aaron Judge reveals Bryce Harper’s powerful postseason message before Yankees vs. Red Sox game
Aaron Judge said he was talking to Bryce Harper shortly before the 2025 postseason began. That is when Harper shared advice he tells himself every October.
Judge said on The Pat McAfee Show, as reported by ESPN, “I think one of the coolest things, I was talking to Harper before the postseason this last year. He texted me probably the coolest thing. He was like, ‘Hey, one thing I tell myself every postseason, every big game… Own the moment, do not let the moment own you.’
There is so much unknown, you do not know what is going to happen, like, own the moment. ”
Judge continued with the full message Harper sent: “Big spot, nobody is on base, who cares? Go out there and own it.” Then Judge admitted how it felt. “And, like, gave me chills… Before I walked onto the steps in Yankee Stadium, about to play the Red Sox, and before I went out there I was like, ‘Hey, own the moment.’”
That game carried playoff pressure. Yankees vs. Red Sox always does. The rivalry is historic, and the stadium atmosphere can feel heavy. But Judge said those words helped him stay calm.
Bryce Harper has built a strong postseason reputation with the Philadelphia Phillies. He has delivered in big October moments over the past few years. So when advice comes from someone who has been there before, it carries weight.
What stands out is Judge’s honesty. He did not have to share that story. He did not have to admit he needed that reminder. But he did. That says something about his leadership style.
Aaron Judge is not just the Yankees’ best hitter. He is their captain. And sometimes, leadership means being open enough to learn, even when you are already at the top of the game.
