Sunderland Stun Arsenal with Last-Gasp Equalizer in 2-2 Thriller

Key Takeaways

  • Arsenal’s 10-match winning streak ends with dramatic 2-2 draw at Sunderland
  • Brian Brobbey scores stoppage-time equalizer to deny Gunners victory
  • Sunderland defender Dan Ballard stars with goal, assist and crucial block
  • Arsenal maintain 7-point lead over Manchester City despite dropped points

Dramatic Stoppage-Time Equalizer Halts Arsenal’s Run

Premier League leaders Arsenal saw their impressive winning streak shattered in dramatic fashion as Brian Brobbey’s stoppage-time volley earned Sunderland a deserved 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light on November 8.

The Gunners appeared headed for their 11th consecutive victory across all competitions after fighting back from a halftime deficit, but Brobbey’s late intervention ensured the points were shared in a thrilling encounter.

Sunderland Strike First Through Ballard

Sunderland defender Dan Ballard broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, becoming the first player to breach Arsenal’s defense in nine matches. The Northern Ireland international showed impressive strength to hold off Declan Rice before firing past David Raya, sending the home supporters into raptures.

The goal marked the first time Mikel Arteta’s side had conceded since their September encounter with Manchester City.

Arsenal Fight Back in Second Half

Arsenal emerged transformed after the interval, dominating possession and creating numerous chances. Captain Bukayo Saka leveled the scores in the 54th minute, finishing calmly after being set up by Mikel Merino following a Rice turnover.

The visitors continued to press and were rewarded in the 74th minute when Leandro Trossard cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable thunderbolt past goalkeeper Robin Roefs that seemed certain to secure all three points.

Brobbey’s Late Heroics

Just as Arsenal appeared to have secured victory, Sunderland mounted one final attack. Brian Brobbey displayed exceptional athleticism to volley home from close range in stoppage time, completing a memorable comeback for the promoted side.

Dan Ballard, who had already scored the opener, provided the assist for the equalizer and later made a sensational goal-saving block in the frantic final moments.

“You saw again the fight in the team. The boys worked so hard throughout the whole week. We fight right to the end,” Ballard, whose winning goal sent Sunderland to last season’s Championship playoff final, said.“The number of late goals we’ve scored – it’s brilliant.”

League Implications

The result leaves Arsenal with 26 points, maintaining their seven-point advantage over second-placed Manchester City, who face champions Liverpool on November 9. Sunderland climb to third position with 19 points, continuing their dream start under manager Regis Le Bris.

While Arsenal will rue missed opportunities to extend their lead at the summit, Sunderland’s resilience demonstrated why they’ve emerged as surprise contenders in this Premier League campaign.

Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard scores their second goal.
