Manchester City edged closer to Premier League leaders Arsenal with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road. Antoine Semenyo’s composed finish in first-half stoppage time proved the only goal of the game, delivering three vital points for Pep Guardiola’s side and reducing the gap at the top to just two points.
Leeds United set aggressive tone from kick-off
Leeds came out full of energy and took control in the opening minutes. They played with speed and pressed Manchester City hard. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the best chance early on when he met Brenden Aaronson’s cross, but he sent the ball wide instead of scoring. The loud home crowd helped push Leeds forward and made things difficult for City at the start. Around the 13th minute, the match stopped for a short time so Muslim players could break their Ramadan fast.
Man City slowly found their feet. Semenyo tried a shot that went over the bar, and Nico O’Reilly forced a good save from Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow with a strong header. Leeds stayed dangerous when they broke forward quickly, and City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had to stay sharp.
Antoine Semenyo scores the winning goal just before half-time
Right at the end of the first half, Rayan Cherki made a clever pass that opened up the Leeds defence. Rayan Ait-Nouri ran onto the ball and sent a low cross into the box. Semenyo arrived at the right time and calmly slid the ball into the net from close range. The goal came at 45+2′ when Leeds were not expecting it and gave City the lead they needed.
Man City show resilience to hold on in tense second half
The second half became low on clear chances. Both teams struggled with final balls and finishing, while niggly fouls broke up any rhythm. Leeds injected fresh energy late on by bringing on Daniel James and Wilfried Gnonto, lifting the home supporters and putting Man City under pressure.
Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi stood tall at the back, making blocks and vital headers. Darlow pulled off a good stop from a Guehi header, but City defended to protect their slender advantage and claim a precious clean sheet.
Title pressure builds as Manchester City stay right in the hunt
This hard-earned win extends Manchester City’s strong recent form and keeps the pressure squarely on Arsenal (61 points). With the gap now trimmed to two points, the Premier League title race remains wide open heading into the final stretch of the season.
