KL Rahul Set to Captain India in ODI Series Against South Africa
KL Rahul is expected to return as India’s ODI captain for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa. This development comes as regular captain Shubman Gill faces an extended injury layoff with a serious neck issue.
Key Takeaways
- KL Rahul likely to lead India in ODIs after two-year gap
- Shubman Gill’s neck injury more serious than initially thought
- Shreyas Iyer also unavailable due to rib cage injury
- First ODI scheduled for November 30 in Ranchi
Gill’s Injury Situation
Shubman Gill suffered a whiplash injury while batting during the first Test in Kolkata. The injury has proven more complex than a simple neck spasm, potentially involving muscle or nerve issues.
Gill is currently in Mumbai undergoing MRI scans and consulting specialists, including spinal expert Dr Abhay Nene. BCCI sources indicate he has received injections to manage symptoms and will require significant rest before beginning rehabilitation.
“All tests are being done to ascertain whether it is a muscular injury or a nerve-related niggle. As of now, Gill has been given an injection to alleviate symptoms and will need rest before rehab. There is every chance he could also be doubtful for the T20I series,” PTI reported quoting a BCCI source.
With no clear recovery timeline established, Gill will miss the ODI series and likely the T20I series starting December 9.
Leadership Choices
With both Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer unavailable, selectors considered Rishabh Pant for the captaincy. However, Pant’s limited ODI exposure in the past year during his injury recovery made him a less favorable option.
This makes KL Rahul, India’s first-choice ODI wicketkeeper and former captain, the strongest candidate. Rahul last captained India during the South Africa tour in December 2023.
The selectors prefer stability given Iyer’s expected two-month recovery period from a spleen injury, making Rahul the safest leadership choice for the crucial series.
