ICC Expands Women’s ODI World Cup to 10 Teams for 2029 Edition

ICC Expands Women’s ODI World Cup to 10 Teams for 2029 Edition

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a major expansion of the Women’s ODI World Cup, increasing the number of participating teams from eight to ten for the 2029 tournament.

Building on Record-Breaking Success

The decision follows the tremendous success of the recent tournament, where India claimed their first-ever global trophy in women’s cricket by defeating South Africa in the final.

“The ICC board, keen to build on the success of the event, agreed to expand the next edition of the tournament to 10 teams (from 8 teams in 2025),” an ICC press release stated.

Unprecedented Fan Engagement

The 2025 tournament shattered multiple records:

  • Nearly 300,000 stadium attendees – breaking all previous women’s cricket tournament records
  • Approximately 500 million viewers in India alone
  • Global viewership growth and new audience records worldwide

The expansion to ten teams represents a significant step forward for women’s cricket, providing more opportunities for emerging nations to compete at the highest level.
