Connor Murphy’s Edmonton Oilers Debut Delayed Until Friday Due to Immigration and Travel

The Edmonton Oilers will have to wait a few more days before seeing their newest defenseman in action. Connor Murphy will not be available for Tuesday night’s game against the Senators at Rogers Place despite being acquired Monday afternoon.

Edmonton sent a 2028 second-round pick to the Blackhawks in exchange for the veteran right-shot blueliner. Immigration and travel logistics prevented Murphy from arriving in Edmonton until later Monday evening, making him unavailable for the Oilers’ homestand opener.

Edmonton Oilers Testing New Pairings Against Ottawa Senators

Head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed Murphy should make his debut Friday against the Hurricanes. The delay gives the coaching staff time to evaluate defensive pairings before determining where the 32-year-old fits best on the blue line.

Knoblauch plans to trial new defensive combinations Tuesday night. The coach wants to assess how his current group performs before slotting Murphy into the lineup later this week. “We’ll see how things go tonight,” Knoblauch said regarding Murphy’s eventual defense partner.

The evaluation process allows Edmonton to identify which pairing would benefit most from Murphy’s steady presence. The Oilers desperately need help on the back end.

Edmonton ranks 26th in goals against per game at 3. 33 and 26th in penalty-kill percentage at 76. 9 percent this season.

The team has lost two of its last three games despite scoring 17 goals during that stretch. The offensive firepower remains elite, but defensive breakdowns have cost the Oilers crucial points as they push toward the playoffs.

Murphy spent nine seasons in Chicago and developed a reputation as one of the league’s most underrated defensemen. His ability to shut down opponents at five-on-five represents exactly what Edmonton needs for the final stretch.

Knoblauch emphasized Murphy’s impact will extend beyond special teams. The coach believes the veteran will strengthen the Oilers at even strength more than anywhere else. “I think our two ailments this year have not been producing more offence – it’s been defending and five-on-five defending,” Knoblauch said.

“The biggest improvement will be the five-on-five not giving up as many chances.” Murphy also brings penalty-kill experience and shot-blocking ability that should help Edmonton’s struggling special teams. His strong defensive presence gives every pairing a reliable partner.

Connor Ingram will start his third consecutive game on Tuesday while the Oilers wait for Murphy’s arrival. The team held an optional skate, so final lines and defensive pairings will be confirmed during warmups against the Senators.
