BWF Awards 2026 World Championships to New Delhi Despite Past Controversy
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has officially confirmed New Delhi, India, as the host city for the prestigious 2026 BWF World Championships. This decision comes despite significant controversy over hygiene and food quality issues that marred the India Open earlier this year.
Key Details:
- Dates: January 10-18, 2026
- Venue: KD Jadhav Indoor Hall, New Delhi
- Host: Badminton Association of India (BAI)
- Significance: First time India hosts the event since 2009.
Vote of Confidence After India Open Issues
The awarding of the marquee event follows a turbulent India Open in January, where top players like Olympic champion publicly criticized poor food and hygiene. Axelsen had posted on social media, saying he was “dying” from the food and that conditions were “absolutely not acceptable.”
The BWF investigated the incident, and the BAI provided assurances that necessary corrective measures would be implemented for future events.
“We have full confidence in the Badminton Association of India’s ability to host a world-class event. They have a proven track record… and we are looking forward to working with them to deliver a memorable World Championships in 2026,” the BWF said in a statement.
A Major Boost for Indian Badminton
The World Championships is the sport’s top-tier event after the Olympics. Hosting it in 2026 is seen as a major endorsement for Indian badminton, which has produced global stars like , Saina Nehwal, and Kidambi Srikanth.
The event is expected to provide a significant boost, inspiring young players and promoting the sport at the grassroots level across the country.
Future Host Cities Confirmed
In related announcements, the BWF confirmed the 2025 World Championships will be held in Paris, France, and the 2027 edition in Guangzhou, China.
