Barcelona did not know what to do with the ball: Pedri after 1-4 thrashing to Sevilla

FC Barcelona midfielder Pedri was not happy with the team’s performance on Sunday, October 5. Hansi Flick’s team were thrashed 4-1 away from home, their heaviest defeat of the season so far. A heartbroken Pedri spoke after the game and said that the team did not know what to do when they had possession of the ball.

Barcelona fell to a horrid defeat in LaLiga, their first of the season. The team were so toothless that they did not register a single shot on target till the 30th minute of the game. This was Barcelona’s second loss on the bounce, with the first coming in the Champions League on October 2, against PSG.

“We lacked intensity, we couldn’t get the ball out of our half, we didn’t know what to do with the ball… we were never at our best,” Barcelona midfielder Pedri said. “We need to improve a lot of things so that we can start winning games again after the break.”

Sevilla delivered a stunning performance to hand Barcelona their first defeat of the LaLiga season. The result marked Sevilla’s first league win over the Catalan giants since 2015 and denied the defending champions a chance to reclaim top spot in the table.

Barcelona, who entered the game unbeaten, struggled from the outset. Sevilla, meanwhile, started with intent, frequently targeting Alexis Sanchez with long balls to bypass Barcelona’s high defensive line.

The breakthrough came in the 13th minute when Isaac Romero went down under pressure from Ronald Araujo inside the box. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, which Sanchez confidently converted to put Sevilla ahead.

Sevilla nearly doubled their lead shortly after, but Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny produced a key save to deny Romero from close range. However, Romero made no mistake in the 37th minute, finishing off a swift counter-attack started by Ruben Vargas, who beat Barcelona’s offside trap before delivering a precise cross into the box.

Barcelona pulled a goal back just before halftime through Marcus Rashford, who latched onto Pedri’s lobbed pass and finished smartly from a tight angle to give the visitors a lifeline.

In the second half, Barcelona pushed for an equaliser and were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute after Adnan Januzaj fouled Alejandro Balde in the box. However, Robert Lewandowski squandered the opportunity, firing wide from the spot.

Sevilla took full advantage of the miss, and in the 90th minute, Jose Angel Carmona restored the two-goal cushion with a composed finish through a defender’s legs. The scoreline was rounded off deep into added time, as Akor Adams converted a pass from Chidera Ejuke to make it 4-1.

The dominant win provisionally lifted Sevilla to fourth place in the LaLiga standings with 13 points from eight matches, while Barcelona remained second with 19 points, trailing leaders Real Madrid by two.
