Atlético Madrid lost 3–0 to FC Barcelona on Tuesday in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final. However, because Atlético won the first game 4–0, they advanced to the final 4–3 on aggregate.
Barcelona tried hard to complete an incredible comeback at Camp Nou. Young player Marc Bernal scored twice, and Raphinha added a penalty. Despite the win on the night, it was not enough to overturn the heavy first-leg defeat.
Atlético had to defend strongly in the final minutes as Barcelona pushed for a fourth goal that would have sent the tie to extra time. But Diego Simeone’s team held on and reached their first Copa del Rey final since 2013.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said he was proud of his team’s performance.
“We are disappointed but we can be very proud about the performance we showed today,” Barca coach Hansi Flick told reporters.
“It was an amazing game from us and we created a lot of chances to score even more goals. In the end it didn’t happen and we have to accept it.”
Simeone said Atlético deserved to go through over the two matches.
“We were close to getting back to the final (in recent years), and in this two-legged game we were better than Barcelona,” said Simeone.
Barcelona started the game with high energy and created several chances. However, they also suffered a blow when defender Jules Koundé went off injured early on.
In the first half, Barcelona scored twice. Lamine Yamal set up Bernal for the first goal. Later, Pedri won a penalty, and Raphinha calmly scored from the spot.
Bernal scored again in the second half to give Barcelona hope, making it 3–0. Barcelona pushed hard in the final minutes, even sending defender Ronald Araújo forward to help in attack. But Atlético defended bravely and stopped them from scoring again.
Atlético will now face either Real Sociedad or Athletic Bilbao in the final in Seville on April 18.
Midfielder Koke said the team had to suffer but did what was needed to reach the final.
“It’s been five years since we won a trophy, we wanted to get to a final for our fans,” said Atletico midfielder Koke.
Atletico do not know if talisman Antoine Griezmann will still be at the club by the time the final comes around.
The French forward has been linked with a move to MLS side Orlando City.
“I hope he will (play in the final), he deserves it more than anyone,” said Simeone.
Barcelona are left to focus on La Liga, where they lead Real Madrid by four points, and the Champions League, in which they face Newcastle in the last 16.
“The quality we saw today from the team, it’s there, it’s unbelievable, I’m really proud of my team,” added Flick.
