His performance in the 2024-25 season saw him clinch his third Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and skill. Kopitar had already dropped hints about it in interviews, like on the Sports Central Podcast where he mentioned it to host Jaime Maggio, “This could be my last season in the NHL, yes.” By making the decision public before training camp, Kopitar aimed to focus on the upcoming games without distractions.
His family had a huge influence on his choice. At the announcement, with his wife and children beside him, Kopitar elaborated, “They deserve a husband and a dad who’s home and present.” This quote was shared during the press event.
