Anze Kopitar isn’t slowing down as the Los Angeles Kings icon faces his final NHL season head-on

For most players, 38 means slowing down. For Anze Kopitar, it means one last climb. The Los Angeles Kings legend is set to play his final NHL season after another year of brilliance, and he’s not done chasing the Stanley Cup yet. Surrounded by family and driven by pride, Kopitar is ready to empty the tank in pursuit of one more unforgettable run.

season

Even though he’s nearing retirement, Kopitar’s game in the 2024-25 season didn’t show any drop in quality. At 37 years old, he participated in 81 games, netting 21 goals and contributing 46 assists for a total of 67 points, along with a plus-minus of +14. This performance ranked him second on the Kings for points and first for assists.

Throughout his career, Kopitar’s consistency has stood out. In 19 seasons, he managed to play at least 72 games in all but two. His performance in the 2024-25 season saw him clinch his third Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and skill. With the Kings getting ready for the new season, Kopitar is still regarded as one of the league’s most trustworthy centers.

He mentioned wanting to go after another deep playoff run and possibly raise the Stanley Cup one last time.

Under Kopitar’s leadership, the Kings will look to improve on their recent seasons and challenge in the Pacific Division.

Los Angeles Kings star Anze Kopitar confirms retirement plans in front of family and media

On September 18, 2025, Anze Kopitar shared that the 2025-26 NHL season would be his last before hanging up his skates. He made this announcement at the LA Kings offices in El Segundo, California, surrounded by his family.

Kopitar mentioned, “My mind is made up. It was a hard decision, and I will put 100% of my energy into this season.

I know I’m going to give it all. ” This was said during a press conference, as reported by the Associated Press.

The reason for announcing it when they did was to tackle the subject early on and prevent constant questions during the season. Kopitar had already dropped hints about it in interviews, like on the Sports Central Podcast where he mentioned it to host Jaime Maggio, “This could be my last season in the NHL, yes.” By making the decision public before training camp, Kopitar aimed to focus on the upcoming games without distractions.

His family had a huge influence on his choice. At the announcement, with his wife and children beside him, Kopitar elaborated, “They deserve a husband and a dad who’s home and present.” This quote was shared during the press event.

Kopitar is ready to give it his all in his final season, prioritizing the team’s achievements and cherishing moments with his loved ones and supporters.
