Hawaii’s Kilauea erupts again, lava fountain rises over 1,000 feet

Hawaii’s Big Island witnessed a breathtaking natural show on March 11, 2026, as Kilauea volcano erupted in its 43rd episode.

Starting at 12:47 am IST, the eruption unfolded inside a crater at the summit of Mount Kilaueua.

Two powerful lava fountains shot up to 1,300 feet, hurling chunks of hot rock fragments as big as a football near the volcano’s top.

Fine ash and delicate strands of volcanic glass, known as Pele’s hair, drifted up to over 48 kilometres away.

The event triggered quick safety measures, including an ashfall warning for the summit area and advisories for eastward regions. Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park has limited access to protect visitors from poor visibility and potential engine damage.

By evening, the fountains had calmed below 600 feet before stopping at 9:51 AM IST, prompting the US Geological Survey (USGS) to downgrade the alert from warning to watch, easing tensions for locals.

Community reports through USGS tools are helping map the fallout and improve future predictions.

HAS KILAUEA VOLCANO ERUPTED BEFORE?

Kilauea has earned its spot as one of the world’s most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent bursts.

The volcano has seen other similar episodes, sometimes creating glowing lava lakes and fountains visible even from space.

In December 2024, an eruption featured red lava fountains that captivated viewers worldwide, while a March 2025 resumption sent molten rock pouring from vents.

More recently, Episode 42 in February 2026 unleashed a 1,000-foot lava fountain that lit up the night sky for over seven hours, and Episode 40 in January saw dome-shaped fountains up to 50 feet tall.

These episodes highlight Kilauea’s pattern of short, intense activity after pauses, driven by underground magma pressure.

Unlike explosive volcanoes, Kilauea’s flows are usually contained, making it a natural wonder rather than a constant threat.

HOW DID KILAUEA’S ERUPTION IMPACT DAILY LIVES?

While mesmerising to look at, eruptions like this bring real challenges.

Ash and Pele’s hair can irritate eyes and lungs, prompting health warnings. Past events, such as the violent December 2025 blast that melted a distant camera, show how heat and debris can damage equipment and roads.

This time, park restrictions and highway closures disrupted tourism and travel, but no homes were threatened since the lava stayed within the crater. Locals are used to it and expect the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to reopen quickly, as it often happens.
