Fresh snow likely in the hills on Friday, plains to face premature summer surge

India is set to witness a stark weather divide tomorrow, as northern peaks prepare for fresh snow while the plains and coastal regions brace for a premature summer surge.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), maximum temperatures are likely to stay four to six degrees Celsius above normal across many parts of northwest India and three to five degrees Celsius above adjoining central regions.

WILL WESTERN INDIA HEATWAVE CONDITIONS?

The heat is building up significantly in western India. Skymet reported that Mumbai and coastal Gujarat have breached the 37 degrees Celsius threshold for heatwave conditions.

Devendra Tripathi, founder of Mausam Tak and weather vlogger for Kisan Tak, warned that the “heat wave threat looms over several states” even as the north awaits a weather change. Devendra stated in his latest update that “while a western disturbance will soon reach the north, several states are under a heatwave alert.”

Independent weather expert Navdeep Dahiya noted that the abnormal rise in temperature will persist this week. He highlighted that many cities in Rajasthan, including Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, have already crossed the 35 degrees Celsius mark, with a possibility of mercury touching 40 degrees Celsius in the state by the weekend.

Dahiya also projected that Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh could see temperatures ranging between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius during the same period.

WHAT IS THE FORECAST FOR THE HIMALAYAS?

Relief is expected for the Western Himalayan region. The IMD has forecast isolated to scattered light rainfall or snowfall over the mountains between March 7 and March 11 due to a “feeble western disturbance”.

Skymet echoed this, predicting a fresh round of light rain and snow for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand starting tomorrow. Despite this, the IMD confirmed that the system is too mild to significantly cool the scorching plains.
