Kitpi Hydro Station Upgrade Nears Completion in Tawang District

Upgraded Kitpi Hydro Station in Tawang to Open Soon

Arunachal Pradesh’s oldest hydroelectric project in Tawang district is nearing completion of its major upgrade, with Chief Minister Pema Khandu announcing that test runs are currently underway at the Kitpi small hydro electric station Phase-I.

Key Project Details

The Kitpi station, originally built in 1977, has undergone a complete modernization with new infrastructure. Chief Minister Khandu confirmed the progress via social media, stating: “Inspected the Kitpi small hydro electric station Phase-I today, the oldest hydel project in Tawang district, originally built in 1977. The plant has now been upgraded with modern infrastructure, and the test run is currently in progress.”

This vital power source has served Tawang for decades but required equipment upgrades to meet growing electricity demands and improve reliability for local communities.

Significance for Remote Power Infrastructure

The state government has emphasized improving smaller hydro projects that directly support daily electricity needs in remote areas. Once operational, the upgraded facility will play a crucial role in meeting the district’s power requirements.

Khandu confirmed the project will be dedicated to the public shortly, representing a significant step in strengthening local power infrastructure.

National Hydro Power Context

The development aligns with national initiatives to harness hydro-power potential. According to Central Election Authority studies (2017-2023), India’s exploitable large hydro potential stands at approximately 133.4 GW, with identified pumped storage potential of about 181.4 GW.
