Commerce Ministry to Present Crop Price Stabilisation Plan
The Commerce Ministry will present private sector requests to stabilise rice and crop prices to the National Rice Policy and Management Committee (NRPMC) tomorrow, following consultations with major agricultural associations.
Key Demands from Agricultural Sector
After meeting with four agricultural associations last week, Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun revealed they sought comprehensive government support including:
- Access to reliable water sources and quality seeds
- Subsidies for production costs (fertiliser, pesticide, fuel)
- Improved product distribution systems
- Additional supportive measures for farmers
The participating associations included the Thai Rice Mills Association, Thai Northeastern Rice Mills Association, Thai Agriculturist Association, and Crops Grower & Merchandise Association.
Balanced Approach for All Stakeholders
Mrs Suphajee stated the ministry and NRPMC aim to formulate appropriate and balanced measures benefiting all stakeholders. The ministry gathered extensive inputs from various stakeholders to develop strategies for farmers and operators across the agricultural supply chain.
Some farmers have been advised to conduct pilot projects growing alternative crops in suitable planting areas, with authorities offering financial support to mitigate risks and increase productivity.
Managing Rice Surplus and Export Strategy
With a surplus of 3-4 million tonnes of paddy rice this year, the ministry has implemented several management measures:
- Production of bagged rice for domestic distribution through government agencies
- Expedited government-to-government negotiations for rice exports
- Steady release of output to international markets
Maize Price Regulation and Monitoring
The Crops Grower & Merchandise Association specifically urged the government to establish recommended purchasing prices for domestic maize. Current requirements mandate feed mills in Bangkok to purchase:
- Maize with 14.5% moisture content: 9.8 baht per kilogram
- Maize with 30% moisture content: 7.05 baht per kilogram
Mrs Suphajee has directed the Department of Internal Trade and Provincial Commercial Affairs Offices to closely monitor maize trading and take appropriate action against any unfair trade practices.
