Modi to Join ASEAN Summit Virtually; Jaishankar to Represent India

Key Takeaways

  • PM Modi to join 2025 ASEAN Summit virtually due to scheduling constraints
  • EAM Jaishankar will physically represent India in Malaysia from October 26-28
  • India-ASEAN relations elevated to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022
  • 2025 designated as ASEAN-India Year of Tourism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate virtually in the 2025 ASEAN Summit hosted by Malaysia, while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represents India in person. This dual approach maintains India’s high-level engagement with the regional bloc despite the Prime Minister’s scheduling limitations.

India’s Representation at the Summit

EAM Jaishankar will travel to Malaysia on October 26 and return on October 28, participating alongside ASEAN leaders and other dialogue partners. While Modi has regularly attended ASEAN summits since 2014, his virtual participation this year marks a departure from his usual in-person attendance.

Deep-Rooted ASEAN-India Relations

India’s relationship with ASEAN spans shared culture, history, and strategic interests. Since becoming a Dialogue Partner in 1995, ties have progressively strengthened, culminating in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2022.

This partnership supports cooperation across multiple domains including trade, maritime security, digital economy, tourism, and cultural exchanges. Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN chairmanship provides a platform to advance India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision.

Ongoing Cooperation Initiatives

ASEAN-India collaboration includes several key initiatives such as the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative and various cultural and educational exchange programs. The year 2025 has been designated as the ASEAN-India Year of Tourism, highlighting the focus on people-to-people connections.

Economic ties remain strong with ongoing efforts to review trade agreements to boost commerce and investment between the regions.

India’s combined virtual and physical presence at the summit reflects a strategic balance that underscores the country’s commitment to ASEAN’s regional architecture and collaborative future.
