Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose resigns ahead of Assembly elections

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose resigned from his post after serving for three-and-a-half years. The move ahead of the 2026 assembly election in the state. Following the resignation, Bose told PTI that he had spent enough time in the office and hence did not want to continue further. Following his resignation, RN Ravi, the erstwhile Governor of Tamil Nadu, will take charge as the next Governor of the state.

“I have been the Governor of Bengal for three-and-a-half years; it is enough for me,” Bose told PTI. However, he did not disclose the reason behind his resignation.

The resignation drew a sharp reaction from Bengal’s political arena, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing her astonishment over the decision. In a post on X, Banerjee wrote that she was “Shocked and concerned” over the decision.

“The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections,” Banerjee wrote.
Taking further jibe at the BJP-led Central government, she further added, “Union Home Minister just informed me that Shri R.N. Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard. Such actions undermine the spirit of the Constitution of India and strike at the very foundation of our federal structure. The Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking unilateral decisions that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of States.”

Meanwhile, Bose is expected to take part in the Darjeeling Hill Festival, set to be inaugurated by the President of India on March 6 (Friday). The official account of Lok Bhavan announced the news from its X account.

“Darjeeling is set to host history. The Darjeeling Hill Festival, the first of its kind, will be launched by the Hon’ble President of Bharat, Shrimati Droupadi Murmu, on 6 March 2026, in the presence of Hon. Governor Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose, celebrating the rich art, culture and heritage of the hills and North Bengal — the living spirit of Gurudev’s Sonar Bangla. A highlight of the festival will be “Roots and Rhythm”, an exhibition featuring iconic artefacts from the historic Indian Museum,” the Lok Bhavan account shared.

In another incident, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, also submitted his resignation on Thursday. Gupta was appointed as the third Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh in July 2025 and served for nearly a year.

As back-to-back resignations took place on the same day, it is being assumed that Governors in many states will be replaced in the upcoming time under the direction of the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
