India’s Defence Production Hits Record Rs 1.54 Lakh Crore in 2024-25

India’s Defence Production Hits Record Rs 1.54 Lakh Crore in 2024-25

India’s defence sector has achieved its highest-ever production value of Rs 1.54 lakh crore in 2024-25, marking a dramatic transformation from just Rs 46,429 crore a decade ago. This 174% surge since 2014-15 reflects the success of Atmanirbhar Bharat reforms and positions India as an emerging global defence manufacturing hub.

Key Takeaways

  • Defence production reached record Rs 1.54 lakh crore in 2024-25
  • Exports hit Rs 23,622 crore, up from less than Rs 1,000 crore in 2014
  • 16,000 MSMEs are driving indigenous defence capabilities
  • Private sector contribution grew to 23% of total production

Historic Growth Trajectory

India’s indigenous defence production has shown remarkable growth, increasing from Rs 46,429 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 127,434 crore in 2023-24. The country is now targeting Rs 1.75 lakh crore in the current fiscal year, with ambitious goals of reaching Rs 3 lakh crore in manufacturing and Rs 50,000 crore in exports by 2029.

Export Expansion and Global Reach

Defence exports have transformed dramatically, reaching Rs 23,622 crore in 2024-25 from just Rs 686 crore in 2013-14. India now exports to over 100 countries, including the United States, France, and Armenia.

“Exports are more than commerce: they build trust, interoperability and long-term partnerships. India’s expanding export basket, supplied to friendly countries, is an instrument of outreach, seen in defence cooperation, logistics support, training and spares packages that accompany sales.”

Private Sector Emergence

The private sector’s contribution to defence production has grown from 21% in 2023-24 to 23% in 2024-25, reflecting its expanding role in the defence ecosystem. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other PSUs account for approximately 77% of total production.

Policy Reforms Driving Transformation

The government has implemented comprehensive reforms to address previous bottlenecks including slow procurement processes, high import dependency, and limited private sector participation. Key initiatives include:

  • Streamlined Defence Acquisition Procedures (DAP) 2020
  • Defence Procurement Manual (DPM) 2025
  • Positive Indigenisation Lists
  • Liberalised FDI norms up to 74% through automatic route
  • Rs 1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Scheme

Defence Industrial Corridors

Two dedicated defence corridors – Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) and Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TNDIC) – have attracted investments worth over Rs 9,145 crore. With 289 MoUs signed, these corridors have unlocked Rs 66,423 crore in potential opportunities as of October 2025.

Record Contracts and Digital Transformation

In 2024-25, the Ministry of Defence signed a record 193 contracts valued at Rs 209,050 crore – the highest ever in a single financial year. Of these, 177 contracts worth Rs 168,922 crore were awarded to domestic industry. The Department of Defence Production processed 1,762 export authorisations through its digital portal, marking 16.92% year-on-year growth.

“From the establishment of Defence Industrial Corridors to the expansion of export facilitation, every measure underscores India’s commitment to reducing import dependency and promoting indigenous capabilities. Together, these efforts are shaping a resilient, technology-driven defence ecosystem.”

The comprehensive reforms have positioned India as one of the most attractive destinations for defence investment, with 788 industrial licenses issued to 462 companies and growing global confidence in Indian defence platforms.
