Bengaluru cafe passes LPG hike to customers with ‘Gas Crisis Charge’ on lemonade; internet asks, “Did they boil it?”

With LPG prices going up in India, even a small cafe bill in Bengaluru has managed to start a conversation online. This time, it wasn’t the food or the drink that caught people’s attention, but an unexpected line on the receipt – a “Gas Crisis Charge. ”

The charge appeared on a bill for lemonade, and once the photo was shared online, people quickly began reacting. Some found it funny, while others wondered whether such fees should be added to a customer’s bill.

Theo Cafe receipt sparks discussion

As reported by News18, the receipt was from Theo Cafe. A customer had ordered two mint lemonades, priced at Rs 179 each. Along with GST, the bill also showed a 5 percent “Gas Crisis Charge,” which came to Rs 17.01.

The cafe had also applied a 5 percent discount. After the tax, the gas charge, and the discount were included, the final bill total came to Rs 374.

Social media responds with jokes

When the receipt photo started circulating on the social media platform X, users quickly began sharing their reactions. Many were surprised to see a gas-related fee added to a lemonade order.

Some joked, “Nimbu garam karke daala hai kya?” Another comment read, “Next what? Bangalore is charging for a change in weather.”

The unusual charge clearly caught people off guard.

Questions raised about the extra fee

Along with the jokes, a few users also questioned whether such charges should appear separately on a bill. Some felt that if cafes want to include additional costs like this, it might be better to make them optional for customers.

Others defend the cafe

At the same time, a few users said the charge might not be unreasonable. Rising LPG prices can increase operating costs for small cafes and restaurants.

One user wrote, “When a person is good enough to afford ₹179 for a mere lemonade, which would otherwise cost ₹10-15, another ₹17 shouldn’t burden any further. Also, a discount of ₹18 is already provided, nullifying the charge levied.”
