Which is the last road of India?

India has a road that quite literally leads you to the very edge of its mainland, a striking coastal stretch where the land gradually dissolves into the vast expanse of the sea. Here, endless horizons, powerful ocean winds, and sweeping blue waters create an almost surreal atmosphere.

Steeped in legend and layered with history, this remarkable endpoint beautifully blends mythology with real-world geography. It’s no surprise that travellers, history enthusiasts, and geography lovers alike proudly refer to it as the “Last Road of India.”

The last road of India describes the concluding segment of National Highway 87, which starts from Rameswaram and extends to Arichal Munai at Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu, marking the farthest motorable edge of the Indian mainland before the sea takes over.

This is where the road ends and the vast sea begins.

This coastal route is not only a road but also a unique geographic margin between two great water bodies, the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED?

  • State: Tamil Nadu
  • District: Ramanathapuram
  • Starts at: Rameswaram
  • Ends at: Arichal Munai, just beyond Dhanushkodi, a tiny settlement at the island’s tip.

The total drive from Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi is roughly 20 km, and then a few extra kilometres of barren sandy track take you to Arichal Munai, the final frontier of the road.

HISTORY AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

The region surrounding India’s last road is deeply rooted in mythology and history. According to the ancient epic Ramayana, this coastal stretch is believed to be the starting point of the legendary bridge built by Lord Rama to reach Lanka, a chain of limestone shoals popularly known as Rama Setu or Adam’s Bridge.

The very name Dhanushkodi translates to “end of the bow,” symbolically linked to the belief that Lord Rama marked this spot with the tip of his bow before the bridge was constructed.

Beyond its mythological importance, Dhanushkodi also holds a tragic place in modern history. Until 1964, it was a bustling coastal town complete with houses, a functioning railway station, a port, and busy marketplaces.

However, a catastrophic cyclone struck in December 1964, flattening the town and claiming many lives. The destruction was so severe that the area was officially declared unfit for habitation, and it remains largely abandoned to this day, with haunting ruins silently narrating its past.

WHY IS THIS ROAD SPECIAL?

  • Ocean on both sides: As you drive along this narrow stretch, the sea appears on either side of the road, creating the surreal experience of travelling along water with uninterrupted views reaching the horizon
  • Geographical endpoint: Arichal Munai stands as one of the last motorable points on India’s mainland, marking the place where the country’s landmass gives way to the vast open waters
  • Scenic coastal drive: With its dramatic seascapes, windswept sands, and endless blue surroundings, this route is often regarded as one of the most striking and unique coastal drives in India.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Is this the last road in India geographically?

In terms of the final point where a public motorable road on the Indian mainland ends before the sea begins, the stretch culminating at Arichal Munai in Dhanushkodi is widely recognised as the last road of India.

2. Can you drive beyond Arichal Munai?

The road concludes at Arichal Munai, beyond which lies the open sea, and vehicular movement is not permitted past this final point.

3. How far is Sri Lanka from the last road?

Sri Lanka is about 18–20 km away across the sea from the Dhanushkodi tip.

4. Is Dhanushkodi still inhabited?

Not as a town, Dhanushkodi was destroyed in 1964 and remains largely abandoned today.

A ROAD THAT TOUCHES THE EDGE

The Last Road of India isn’t just another highway marker; it’s a place where history, myth and geography come together. From the legends of the Ramayana to the silent ruins of Dhanushkodi and the endless horizon at Arichal Munai, this road represents one of the most fascinating endpoints on Indian soil.

Whether you’re a traveller, a geography lover, or simply a quiz enthusiast, this stretch of NH 87 deserves a spot on your list!
