The story of the LPG cylinder begins with something strangely ordinary. A motorist walked into a garage in the United States in the early twentieth century with a complaint that puzzled everyone around him. He had filled his petrol tank, but the fuel seemed to disappear far too quickly.
Nothing was leaking. The tank looked perfectly sealed. Yet the petrol level kept dropping.
The mystery eventually landed on the desk of a young chemist named Walter O Snelling. What seemed like a minor annoyance to the car owner became an irresistible puzzle for him. Snelling began examining the petrol itself, asking a question that few others had bothered to explore.
Where exactly was the fuel going?
A CURIOUS MIND AT WORK
Snelling’s investigation led him into the strange behaviour of volatile gases hidden inside petrol. At the time, fuel was understood mostly as a liquid. The idea that lighter gases inside it could evaporate and escape easily was not widely studied.
In his small laboratory, Snelling started separating the components of petrol and observing how they behaved. Some portions evaporated quickly. Others stayed behind. Slowly, he identified a group of gases that were responsible for the vanishing fuel.
These gases included propane and butane. They were light, highly flammable and quick to escape into the air. Most refineries treated them as little more than troublesome leftovers of oil processing.
Snelling did not see waste. He saw possibility.
He discovered that under pressure these gases could be cooled and compressed into liquid form. Stored inside strong metal containers, they could remain stable. Once released, they turned back into gas and burned cleanly.
The substance came to be known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas, or LPG.
What began as an investigation into disappearing petrol had opened the door to an entirely new type of fuel.
FROM LABORATORY IDEA TO HOUSEHOLD FUEL
Snelling did more than identify the gases. He worked out ways to separate them and store them safely in pressurised cylinders. This step was crucial. Without a reliable container, the gas would simply escape.
Engineers and companies soon recognised the potential. Among those who helped bring LPG to wider use was Phillips Petroleum Company, which played a role in producing and marketing the fuel during its early years.
In the beginning, LPG found uses in heating, industry and rural homes where pipeline gas was unavailable. Cylinders made it possible to transport fuel to places far from refineries.
Gradually, kitchens entered the picture.
As cities grew and households searched for cleaner fuels than coal or wood, LPG cylinders offered a practical solution. The metal cylinder, compact and portable, became an everyday object across continents.
Few people lighting their kitchen stoves paused to think about the chemist who made it possible.
THE MAN BEHIND THE DISCOVERY
Walter Snelling was born in 1880 in Washington DC. His childhood unfolded during a time when chemistry and engineering were transforming industry across the United States.
From an early age he showed an easy comfort with experiments and technical ideas. Chemistry appealed to him because it explained the invisible forces shaping everyday life. Gases, fuels, reactions. These were not abstract ideas to him but puzzles waiting to be solved.
His education led him deeper into chemical research, and he built a career studying fuels and petroleum products. Colleagues remembered him as methodical, patient and curious about even the smallest irregularities in experiments.
Outside the laboratory he led a quiet personal life with his family. Public attention rarely interested him. His satisfaction came from understanding problems that others overlooked.
The leaking petrol tank that started the LPG story might have seemed trivial to many scientists. Snelling treated it like a clue.
A DISCOVERY HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT
The LPG cylinder today sits quietly in kitchens, factories and roadside stalls across the world. It rarely attracts attention. People simply turn the knob, light the flame and begin cooking.
Yet the idea behind that cylinder began with a curious chemist asking why petrol was disappearing from a tank.
Snelling died in 1965, long after his work had spread far beyond the small laboratory where it started. By then LPG had become a widely used fuel in homes and industries.
The metal cylinder beside a stove may look simple. Behind it lies a story of curiosity, patience and a scientist who decided to chase a mystery that most people would have ignored.
