Lead found in everyday vegetables: Bengaluru study raises serious food safety concerns

Vegetables are usually considered an essential part of a healthy diet. But are all vegetables really safe to eat? A recent report has raised serious concerns.

Out of 72 vegetable samples collected from local markets in and around Bengaluru, 19 were found to contain lead, a toxic heavy metal that can severely harm human health.

ARE THE VEGETABLES ON YOUR PLATE SAFE?

Vegetables are an integral part of the Indian diet. Fresh greens not only enhance the taste of food but also provide essential nutrients needed for good health. However, the safety of the vegetables we buy from local markets is now under scrutiny.

In a recent investigation, 72 vegetable samples were collected from Bengaluru and nearby local markets.

Shockingly, 19 of these samples were found to contain lead, a poisonous metal that can pose serious health risks.

WHAT DID THE REPORT REVEAL?

The report was submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on February 12, 2026, by a committee of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The vegetable samples were tested in a laboratory recognised by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The tests checked for 11 heavy metals, three minerals, and nearly 230 types of pesticides.

Among the vegetables that showed lead levels above the safe limit, brinjal (eggplant) had the highest concentration. Other vegetables where excessive lead was detected included:

  • Bottle gourd
  • Beans
  • Beetroot
  • Cabbage
  • Capsicum
  • Chillies
  • Cucumber
  • Jute leaves (saluyot leaves)
  • Knol-khol
  • Squash

According to the report, brinjal contained 1.953 mg/kg of lead, while the safe limit is only 0.1 mg/kg. This means the lead level was almost 20 times higher than the permissible limit.

HOW DOES LEAD ENTER VEGETABLES?

Speaking to Aaj Tak, Dr Vivek Jain, Senior Doctor at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, explained that if lead enters the soil or water, plants can absorb it through their roots. Once inside the plant, the metal becomes part of the vegetable tissue.

Because of this, simply washing or peeling vegetables cannot remove the lead present inside them.

In addition to lead contamination, pesticide testing was also carried out on 70 vegetable samples. Out of these, 10 samples were found to contain pesticide levels above the permissible limit, which is another cause for concern.

HOW DANGEROUS IS LEAD FOR HUMANS?

Lead is considered extremely toxic for humans. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), exposure to lead contributed to more than 1.5 million deaths globally in 2021, many of them linked to cardiovascular diseases.

Children are especially vulnerable to lead exposure. High levels of lead in the body can damage the nervous system, affecting brain development and reducing cognitive ability.

Dr Jain said that there is no completely safe level of lead exposure. In many cases, children may not show clear symptoms even when lead levels are high. The only reliable way to detect lead exposure in the body is through a blood test.

THIS IS NOT A NEW ISSUE

Experts say this issue has been under investigation for some time. In October 2023, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) took note of a study that highlighted the presence of heavy metals in vegetables grown around Bengaluru.

The study was conducted by the Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute (EMPRI). Following this, the NGT directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to conduct detailed testing of vegetables for heavy metals and pesticides.

HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF?

Dr Jain says that while contamination inside vegetables cannot always be removed completely, washing vegetables thoroughly can help eliminate surface dirt and some harmful compounds.

Parents should also ensure that children receive a balanced diet rich in iron, calcium, and vitamin C. These nutrients may help reduce the harmful effects of lead exposure in the body.

Regular health check-ups and timely testing are also important, especially if exposure to contaminated food or water is suspected.

Experts emphasise that awareness and proper food safety practices are crucial to reduce the risks associated with heavy metal contamination in everyday food items.
