Key Takeaways

  • Cyclone Montha has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm with 110 kmph winds
  • Landfall expected near Kakinada tonight, triggering mass evacuations
  • Red alerts issued for coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha districts

Monstrous Scale Revealed in Satellite Imagery

Striking images from ISRO’s INSAT-3DR satellite show the cyclone’s terrifying scale, capturing the dense, spiraling eyewall and massive cloud formations. The visual data underscores the system’s intensity as it approaches the coastline.

Emergency Measures Activated

Authorities have launched massive evacuation operations across vulnerable coastal districts, relocating thousands of residents including pregnant women and elderly populations from low-lying areas. Relief shelters have been prepared and disaster response teams positioned for immediate action.

“Very rough to high sea conditions” are expected, with waves already reaching 4.7 meters along the Andhra coast. Storm surges threaten to inundate coastal communities, prompting officials to urge residents to move to higher ground.

Transport Disruption and Safety Measures

The storm has already disrupted transportation networks, with numerous train services canceled or rerouted in the Waltair region. Multiple coastal airports have suspended operations, while fishermen have been ordered to remain ashore and ports have halted activities.

Power authorities are on high alert anticipating widespread blackouts from strong winds and falling trees. Heavy rainbands are expected to drench coastal regions through the night, raising concerns about flash floods and landslides in hilly terrain.

Officials emphasize that residents should monitor official advisories, stay indoors, and avoid unnecessary travel until Cyclone Montha passes.
