Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, will not release in India on March 20 as initially scheduled. Instead, the film’s Indian premiere has been moved to March 26. The unconfirmed buzz in the trade is the move was necessitated to avoid a box office collision with Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Headlined by actor Ranveer Singh, the Dhurandhar sequel is set for a March 19 release.
Sony Pictures India and IMAX India on Friday informed fans that Project Hail Mary, the much-awaited science fiction film, will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu across IMAX and regular cinemas in India from March 26. The original release plan would have seen the film open in the country alongside its US debut.
In their announcement, Sony and IMAX said, “An update from Earth before we head to space! We want this journey to be truly out of this world. #ProjectHailMary will be in IMAX and cinemas on March 26, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu (sic).”
Project Hail Mary storyline and cast
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the upcoming science fiction adventure film is based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Andy Weir, who is also author of The Martian. The story follows Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, a school teacher who finds himself alone on a spacecraft after awakening from a coma and eventually encountering an alien.
The cast also features Sandra Huller, Lionel Boyce and Ken Leung. It is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures International Releasing.
Box office competition averted
Dhurandhar, the first film in the series, was released in December 2025 and became a major box office success, earning over Rs 1,300 crore worldwide. The sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, will release in theatres on March 19 in Hindi as well as several South Indian languages.
Along with Ranveer, the sequel also stars Arjun Rampal, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Sara Arjun and Rakesh Bedi among others.
