Mercy trailer: Chris Pratt races against time, Rebecca Ferguson is AI executioner

Actor Chris Pratt’s upcoming science fiction thriller, Mercy (2026), features him as Detective Chris Raven, a man accused of his wife’s murder. The film’s trailer reveals that actress Rebecca Ferguson co-stars as Maddox, an artificial intelligence (AI) that serves as judge, jury, and executioner for Pratt’s character.

The trailer opens with Pratt’s Raven finding himself in an isolated chamber. In front of him Fergusson’s Maddox appears on-screen, introducing herself as the AI judge. He learns that he has been accused of murdering his wife and has 90 minutes to prove his innocence. Raven counters by recalling that he was the creator of the AI-based program called ‘Mercy’, which was voted by lawmakers to reduce crime rates in the city. He then breaks down as he is warned if he fails to prove his innocence within the given time below 92% threshold, else he will be executed.

As the detective is on a race against time to clear his name from the accusation, it is revealed that his wife was seeing someone, making his guilt upto 98%. Later, Raven asks Maddox if she genuinely thinks he killed his wife or was she just programmed wrong? The trailer ends with Los Angeles Police Department breaking into a building suspecting a bomb attack. Raven is seen telling the AI that it was never about his wife but it was between him and Maddox.

The ‘Mercy’ trailer was unveiled at New York Comic Con. Pratt said the movie, which is set in the near future, was shot like a stage play with 60-minute full-length takes, as reported by Deadline. The actor described the experience as intensely physical, noting that he was “literally was strapped in” for the shoot, which generated a sense of “natural claustrophobia.”

The Timur Bekmambetov directorial is written by Marco van Belle. The film also features Annabelle Wallis, Kali Reis, Rafi Gavron, Chris Sullivan, Kenneth Choi, Kylie Rogers and others in key roles. ‘Mercy’ is scheduled to release on January 23, 2026. It is backed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Atlas Entertainment and Bazelevs Company.

Pratt is known for portraying the character of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3‘ and ‘Avengers’ series.

Ferguson will next be seen in Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part 3’, featuring actors Timothe Chalamet and Zendaya.
