Soha Ali Khan has opened up about how Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor had to face intense scrutiny when they decided to get married. When Saif and Kareena were getting married, the interfaith couple faced severe threats, including death threats and threats against their families. Nonetheless, the two stood firm in their decision, choosing to go ahead with a private ceremony in October 2012. Due to their strong resolve, the backlash wasn’t as intense when Soha got married to Kunal Kemmu.

In a chat with Nayandeep Rakshit on his YouTube channel, Soha was asked if she faced severe backlash due to her interfaith marriage and how it affected her. She said, “I don’t think it got to me because I feel like as long as the people who I love and who I care about and I respect are on the same page as me, it’s okay.”

She explained, “There’s going to be lots of haters, there’s going to be lots of voices, and that’s also okay. I am fine with everyone having an opinion, and that’s all fine. So I think these things like… interfaith marriage, even when Kunal and I got married…”

Soha Ali Khan recalled, “Even when Kareena and bhai got married, there were lots of strange things – Love Jihad, Ghar Wapsi, all kinds of weird headlines were being made as well. You know, ‘You took one of ours, now we will take one of yours’.”

Saif Ali Khan had once revealed to Rediff that Kareena’s father, Randhir Kapoor, had received anonymous letters filled with threats, claiming that the family would be harmed, and even suggesting that their wedding venue could be targeted. However, Saif remained undeterred, drawing strength from his family’s history.

He recalled that his parents, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore, had also faced similar resistance during their interfaith marriage in the 1960s. But these threats didn’t intimidate him. Saif remained unfazed, adding, “Making threats and carrying them out are two different things.”

Sharmila Tagore, in a previous conversation with Mojo Story, had also shared memories of the challenges she and Mansoor Ali Khan faced. During their wedding in Kolkata, her family received telegrams with threats, ominously stating that “bullets shall speak”. While Tiger’s (Mansoor Ali Khan’s) family grew increasingly worried, Sharmila recounted that they moved forward, holding a memorable wedding where, fortunately, “nothing untoward happened”.

This legacy of resilience in the face of adversity seems to have inspired Saif-Kareena and Soha-Kunal as well, providing a sense of stability and perspective during their own trials.
