Jeff Bezos gives Project Hail Mary lift-off with glowing praise for Ryan Gosling

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has publicly praised Ryan Gosling for his performance in Project Hail Mary, calling the film “outstanding” in a post on X.

“Project Hail Mary is outstanding. Ryan Gosling is so talented he somehow conjures emotion and chemistry with his co-star, even though that co-star is an alien rock puppet! It’s an amazing film — huge kudos to the whole Amazon Studios team (sic),” Bezos wrote, giving the sci-fi drama a high-profile endorsement.

Jeff Bezos X post

What is Project Hail Mary about?

Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel of the same name. The story follows Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there — only to realise he’s humanity’s last hope against an extinction-level cosmic threat.
Watch the trailer here:

As the plot unfolds, Grace forms an unlikely alliance with an extraterrestrial being — the now-famous “alien rock puppet” Bezos referenced — turning the film into an emotional survival story set against the vast loneliness of space.

Why is Ryan Gosling’s role significant?

Gosling carries much of the film on his shoulders. With large stretches set in isolation aboard a spacecraft, the performance hinges on subtlety, vulnerability and wit. Add to that the challenge of building believable chemistry with a CGI alien, and it’s clear why Bezos singled him out.

The film blends hard science with humour and heart — territory Gosling navigates with surprising ease. It also stars Sandra Huller, Milana Vayntrub, James Ortiz, Liz Kingsman, and Lionel Boyce, and is slated for release on March 20, 2026 in India.

Who is behind the film?

The project comes from Amazon Studios and boasts a substantial production scale, with visually ambitious space sequences and detailed scientific world-building. It continues the studio’s push into prestige, big-budget storytelling.

Why does Bezos’ praise matter?

While Bezos is no longer Amazon’s CEO, his public endorsement carries weight. A billionaire space enthusiast praising a space survival epic? On-brand, certainly — but also powerful marketing.

For Project Hail Mary, the buzz just travelled at warp speed.
