Gugun Kipgen shines in BAFTA-winning drama set in conflict-torn Manipur ahead of March 6 release – Watch

The trailer for ‘Boong,’ the first Indian film to receive a BAFTA honor in the Best Children’s and Family Film category, has been released ahead of its return to cinemas on March 6. The film tells the emotional story of a young boy who sets out on a cross-border journey to bring his absent father home, believing it will be the greatest gift he can give his mother.

‘Boong’ trailer highlights emotional father search

As Mid-Day reported, the makers revealed that ‘Boong’ is backed by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures. Written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film follows a young boy named Boong whose innocent wish sets him on a journey that ultimately changes his life.

In the story, Boong hopes to surprise his mother with something meaningful. In his innocence, he believes bringing back his missing father will be the perfect gift. His search leads him into a complex world that challenges his understanding of family and belonging.

The newly released trailer offers a glimpse of this emotional narrative. The film blends childhood innocence with deeper themes about loss, resilience, and hope. Its storytelling draws from regional Indian experiences while presenting themes that connect with audiences across cultures.

The film has already attracted global attention. At the 79th British Academy Film Awards, ‘Boong’ received a BAFTA honor in the Best Children’s and Family Film category.

‘Boong’ producers reflect on filming in Manipur

The production team has also spoken about the challenges they faced during filming. Producers Shujaat Saudagar and Vikesh Bhutani recalled the early stages of the project and Lakshmipriya Devi’s first narration of the story.

The film began production in Manipur in 2023. According to Bhutani, the team faced several logistical challenges while filming. “We brought some talent from Mumbai, who could bring an international quality to the production. We went on floors in 2023 and faced a lot of logistical issues. We shot over 45 odd days, spread over two months. A week after the shoot got over, the clashes started erupting,” he said.

Violence broke out in Manipur in May 2023, leaving many communities affected and forcing people to leave their homes. During her BAFTA acceptance speech, director Lakshmipriya Devi called for peace in the region. Producer Shujaat Saudagar echoed that message. “There’s no dearth of hate in this world. The least we can do is use our craft and platform to spread love,” he said.

With its emotional story and international recognition, ‘Boong’ returns to theaters on March 6, giving audiences another chance to experience the film on the big screen.
