Amazon Prime Video’s first look at its live-action God of War series has landed with a thud, and the franchise’s original creator has not held back. David Jaffe has torn into the newly released image, branding it “so dumb” and “terrible”, and bluntly declaring that “Kratos just looks stupid”.
The official still, which shows Ryan Hurst as Kratos supervising an archery lesson for Atreus in a forest, was meant to build anticipation. According to Jaffe, introducing Kratos to a broader television audience through this still was a misstep. “If you are going to reveal to most people a brand-new character that you hope is going to carry your series for the first time this is the way you introduce them?” he asked.
Jaffe also mocked the composition of the image, joking that it looked unintentionally comedic. His blunt assessment has since fuelled wider online debate.
