BAFTA says we will learn after N- word slur involving Michael B Jordan

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has issued a formal apology to Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo after an offensive slur was heard during Sunday night’s BAFTA Film Awards. The Academy said it takes “full responsibility” for the incident and vowed to “learn from this”.

The outburst occurred while Jordan and Lindo were on stage presenting the award for best visual effects to Avatar: Fire and Ash. Campaigner John Davidson MBE, who has Tourette’s syndrome, involuntarily used the N-word — a moment that left the auditorium stunned and quickly sparked debate online.

What exactly happened on the night?

According to BAFTA, guests had been informed in advance that Davidson, who lives with Tourette’s syndrome, might experience involuntary verbal tics during the ceremony. Early in the evening, however, a “profoundly offensive term” was heard clearly across the room while the presenters were on stage.

Jordan and Lindo continued with composure, later praised by the Academy for their “dignity and professionalism”.

Why did BAFTA apologise?

In a detailed statement, BAFTA acknowledged the “trauma and pain” associated with the slur and apologised unreservedly to those affected — particularly the two presenters. The Academy stressed that Tourette’s causes involuntary verbal tics beyond an individual’s control and that such language does not reflect personal beliefs or intent.

Still, BAFTA accepted that the situation placed guests in a “very difficult position” and said it bears full responsibility.

How did the ceremony handle it in real time?

Host Alan Cumming briefly addressed the audience, thanking them for their understanding and offering an apology in case offence had been caused. The moment drew mixed reactions on social media, with some critics calling the response insufficient.

Davidson later chose to leave the auditorium and watch the remainder of the ceremony from a screen.

What happened after the broadcast?

The controversy extended beyond the room when the BBC aired the uncensored moment. The broadcaster subsequently apologised and removed the programme from iPlayer.

BAFTA has reiterated its commitment to inclusion, accessibility and accountability — insisting it will reflect on the incident while keeping compassion at the heart of its events.
