Assi box office Day 3: Taapsee Pannu’s film remains steady over opening weekend

Anubhav Sinha’s Assi, starring Taapsee Pannu in a pivotal role, remained steady at the box office over its opening weekend. The film opened at Rs 1 crore on Friday and stayed in a similar range on Saturday and Sunday.

After its first weekend, Assi has collected Rs 3.97 crore nett, according to trade website Sacnilk. However, the numbers are significantly lower than what Taapsee and Anubhav’s previous collaboration, Thappad, earned at the box office in 2020.

  • Friday: Rs 1 crore
  • Saturday: Rs 1.6 crore
  • Sunday: Rs 1.37 crore
  • Total: Rs 3.97 crore

Thappad, which also tackled patriarchy and gender injustice, opened to similarly strong reviews. However, unlike Assi, it showed substantial growth over its opening weekend, collecting around Rs 15 crore in its first three days.

  • Friday: Rs 3.07 crore
  • Saturday: Rs 5.05 crore
  • Sunday: Rs 6.54 crore
  • Total: Rs 14.66 crore

Assi also features Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Kani Kusruti and Revathi in key roles. The film follows a woman who is sexually assaulted and left on train tracks to die. Sinha powerfully explores her fight against a society that repeatedly attempts to dismiss her trauma and shift the blame onto her for simply walking alone on a road.

India Today gave the film 3.5 stars in its review.

Assi is produced by T-Series and Anubhav Sinha’s Benaras Media Works.
