Alan Cumming pauses BAFTAs after slur directed at Michael B Jordan

The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards took an unexpected turn when host Alan Cumming paused the ceremony to address an on-air outburst that left the room stunned. During the live BBC broadcast from London’s Royal Festival Hall, nominee John Davidson — who lives with Tourette’s syndrome — involuntarily shouted explicit language, including a racial slur, while Michael B Jordan was on stage.

Cumming stepped in twice over the course of the evening, apologising to viewers for the “strong language” and explaining that the remarks were the result of involuntary verbal tics. The interruption briefly disrupted the ceremony’s rhythm, creating visible confusion among presenters and audience members alike.

What exactly happened?

The incident first drew attention during BAFTA chair Sara Putt’s speech, when Davidson shouted phrases including “boring” and “f*** off”. Later, as Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented the Best Visual Effects award, another outburst — this time including the N-word — echoed across the hall and into homes watching live.

Who is John Davidson?

Davidson is the subject of I Swear, a film exploring life with Tourette’s syndrome, in which he is portrayed by Robert Aramayo. He has long spoken publicly about the neurological condition and previously received recognition from Queen Elizabeth II for raising awareness.

How did organisers respond?

Cumming addressed the situation with composure, reminding viewers that Tourette’s can cause involuntary vocal tics and urging understanding. At one point, Davidson exited the auditorium, though discussion around the incident continued throughout the night.

Did the ceremony recover?

It did. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another emerged as the night’s biggest winner, while Sinners and Indian film Boong also picked up major honours.

The awards celebrated cinematic excellence — but this year, they also sparked a wider conversation about awareness, live television, and empathy.
