At least eight commuters were injured at Bardhaman railway station in West Bengal on Sunday evening when a woman lost her balance on a foot overbridge and fell down the stairs, triggering a chain reaction among other passengers.

The incident occurred around 5:30 pm between platforms 4 and 5, according to Howrah Divisional Railway Manager Vishal Kapoor. Among those injured were five women and three men, all of whom were promptly transported to Bardhaman Medical College for medical attention.

What Actually Happened at Bardhaman Station?

Railway officials explained that the situation unfolded when a woman descending the foot overbridge stairs between platforms 4 and 5 lost her balance and fell. As she tumbled down, several other passengers sitting on the stairs also lost their footing, resulting in multiple injuries.

“Eight people got injured, five females and three males. They have been admitted to the hospital. Railways is extending all support to the injured,” stated Kapoor.

The Railway Protection Force and station staff responded quickly to the incident, reaching the spot immediately and assisting in moving the injured passengers to the hospital.

Railways Clarifies: No Stampede Occurred

Indian Railways issued an official statement explicitly denying that a stampede took place. “It is clarified that there was no stampede, and the crowd was normal. Furthermore, there were no casualties. The three injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment,” the statement said.

The authorities emphasized that while the incident resulted in injuries, the station crowd levels remained within normal parameters throughout the event.
