NIA Gets 45-Day Extension in Pahalgam Terror Attack Investigation

NIA Gets Second Extension in Pahalgam Terror Attack Probe

A Jammu court has granted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) an additional 45 days to complete its investigation into the devastating Pahalgam terror attack that killed 25 tourists and a local resident in April.

Key Developments

  • Second 45-day extension granted to NIA for Pahalgam attack probe
  • Extension approved by Special NIA Judge Sandeep Gandotra on October 30
  • Agency awaiting crucial forensic reports on evidence from slain terrorists
  • Two local accused charged with providing logistical support to attackers

Forensic Reports Pending

The NIA informed the court that while “substantial progress” has been made, they are still awaiting critical forensic analysis including:

  • DNA and ballistic reports
  • IED component analysis
  • Digital data recovery from slain terrorists’ devices

The evidence was recovered from three Pakistani terrorists – Suleman Shah, Hamza Afghani and Jibran – believed to have carried out the attack.

Legal Proceedings

Defense counsel Ashwani Kumar opposed the extension, arguing the NIA had “already been given sufficient time” without producing direct evidence. However, the court upheld the plea, noting the “complex and sensitive” nature of the evidence and that the investigation was being conducted “in a proper and professional manner.”

Charges and Accused

The extension allows more time to file charges against locals Bashir Ahmad Jothatd and Parvaiz Ahmed, arrested for allegedly harboring the attackers and providing food and logistical support.

Court’s Directive

Judge Gandotra directed investigators to complete the probe “as soon as possible,” describing the Pahalgam attack as a “heinous act” that “shocked the entire Union Territory.”

Previous Court Ruling

In August, the court had rejected the NIA’s request for narco-analysis and polygraph tests on the accused, ruling that involuntary scientific techniques would violate constitutional protection against self-incrimination under Article 20(3).
