Simplified GST Registration: 3-Day Approval for Small Businesses Starts November 1
Small and low-risk businesses can now obtain GST registration within just 3 working days under a new simplified scheme launching on November 1. The initiative, approved by the GST Council, is expected to benefit 96% of new applicants according to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Key Eligibility Criteria
Businesses can opt for the simplified GST registration if they meet either of these conditions:
- The GST system identifies them as low-risk through data analysis
- They self-assess that their monthly output tax liability won’t exceed ₹2.5 lakh (including CGST, SGST/UTGST and IGST)
Voluntary Participation
The scheme allows for voluntary opting in and withdrawal, providing flexibility for small and medium businesses. The GST Council, comprising Centre and state finance ministers, had approved the simplified registration framework during its September 3 meeting.
Government’s Implementation Focus
Speaking at the CGST building inauguration in Ghaziabad, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized that the “task of the field formation is to operationalise it and ensure that there are no friction in the process.”
The minister also directed CBIC to establish dedicated help desks at GST Seva Kendras to assist taxpayers with the registration process. Currently, over 1.54 crore businesses are registered under GST, with the new scheme expected to significantly streamline onboarding for new applicants.
