Reliance to Launch Solar Power Generation from Massive Kutch Project
Reliance Industries will begin solar power generation in the first half of the next financial year from its massive 5,50,000-acre renewable energy project in Kutch, Gujarat. The site is nearly three times the size of Singapore and represents a major step in the conglomerate’s clean energy transition.
Key Project Milestones
In its latest investor presentation, Reliance confirmed that development across the vast Kutch site is progressing well. Engineering and feasibility studies have been completed, with land development currently underway. The company stated it’s “expected to start commissioning solar generation during the first half of the next year for captive requirements plus green fuels production.”
Massive Clean Energy Investment
Four years ago, Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced a $10 billion investment in new energy business, marking a significant shift for the petroleum refining giant. This led to the creation of the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex, an integrated renewable energy manufacturing hub.
At this year’s shareholder meeting, Anant Ambani revealed the project’s staggering scale:
- Build area four times the size of Tesla’s gigafactory
- Steel order sufficient to build 100 Eiffel Towers
- Cable length enough to “reach the moon and back”
Comprehensive Clean Energy Strategy
Reliance’s clean energy ambitions span multiple technologies:
- Solar PV: 20GWp manufacturing capacity
- Battery Storage: 100GWh giga-factory
- Green Hydrogen: 3 million tonnes per annum by 2032
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel
The company is manufacturing critical equipment in-house, including electrolysers, battery storage systems, and solar panels.
Manufacturing Progress
Reliance continues to expand its solar photovoltaic giga-factory, having already commissioned 4 PV module lines. The first cell line is expected to be commissioned soon, with the company on track to achieve its targeted capacity through modular expansion.
Battery Storage Development
To provide round-the-clock power, Reliance is rapidly progressing with its Battery Energy Storage giga-factory. The company has achieved significant construction and engineering progress for 40 GWh manufacturing capacity, with production line equipment ready for installation.
