Mehli Mistry Steps Down from Tata Trusts Citing Controversy Concerns

Mehli Mistry Resigns from Tata Trusts to Prevent Controversy

Mehli Mistry has stepped down as a trustee of three major Tata philanthropic organizations, citing the need to protect the institutions from potential controversy. In his resignation letter, he emphasized that “nobody is bigger than the institution it serves,” quoting his mentor Ratan Tata.

Key Developments

  • Mistry resigned from Sir Ratan Tata Trust, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, and Bai Hirabai J N Tata Navsari Charitable Institution Trust
  • His formal tenure ended on October 28, 2025
  • The resignation follows board hesitation on his lifetime reappointment

Resignation Details

In his November 4, 2025 letter to trustees, Mistry described his role as a privilege granted through the personal endorsement of the late Ratan N Tata, whom he called his “dearest friend and mentor.” He stated he became aware of recent reports about his trusteeship upon returning to Mumbai.

Mistry reaffirmed his commitment to Ratan Tata’s values, emphasizing he was guided by principles of ethical governance, quiet philanthropy, and integrity throughout his service. He explained his decision aimed to prevent controversy that could affect the philanthropic organization’s reputation.

“I part ways,” Mistry concluded, quoting Ratan Tata to underline that “nobody is bigger than the institution it serves.”

Background of the Controversy

Mistry’s term as trustee formally concluded on October 27, 2025. The Board of Trustees had previously passed a resolution on October 17, 2024 to reappoint him as a lifetime trustee. However, this proposal stalled when the board withheld approval for his reappointment to the two principal trusts.

Before the board’s decision, Mistry had filed a preemptive caveat with the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner, requesting a hearing before any changes were made to the trustee list.
