ITAT Mumbai Clears Engineer in Rs 69 Lakh Tax Case

ITAT Mumbai Clears Engineer in Rs 69 Lakh Unexplained Income Case

The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in Mumbai has ruled in favor of an Indian engineer, deleting a major addition of Rs 69 lakh made by tax authorities who alleged he had under-reported his income while making substantial investments.

Key Case Details

The case centered on an engineer who declared minimal income in his tax returns but was found to have purchased a residential flat worth Rs 39 lakh and made fixed deposits worth Rs 30 lakh, bringing his total investments to Rs 69 lakh.

Six-Year Legal Battle Ends

The verdict brings to an end a six-year-long stand-off between the taxpayer and authorities, providing significant relief to the engineer. The case also highlights the digital monitoring tools currently deployed by the Income Tax Department to track high-value financial transactions.

Tax advisory platform Tax Buddy provided detailed insights into the case through a social media post, explaining the complexities involved in such high-stakes tax disputes.
