India on Track for 500 GW Renewable Energy Target by 2030

India Confident of Hitting 500 GW Renewable Energy Goal by 2030

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos that India is firmly on course to achieve its ambitious target of 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Key Energy Strategy

Joshi, who holds the portfolios for Coal, Mines, and Parliamentary Affairs, outlined a multi-pronged strategy to meet the nation’s surging energy demand while transitioning to a sustainable future.

  • Renewable Expansion: The 500 GW renewable capacity target is a cornerstone of India’s climate commitments.
  • Domestic Coal & Clean Tech: Simultaneously boosting domestic coal production to cut import reliance, alongside promoting clean coal and carbon capture technologies.
  • Green Hydrogen: A major push for a hydrogen economy, aiming to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 under a National Hydrogen Mission.

Holistic Approach to a Green Economy

The minister’s address highlighted a comprehensive plan beyond power generation. Key focus areas include:

Energy Efficiency & EVs: Implementing programs to reduce consumption and developing charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Circular Economy: Promoting waste-to-energy technologies to minimise the carbon footprint.

Critical Minerals: Developing the mining sector and formulating a national mineral policy to secure raw materials essential for the energy transition, with potential international collaboration.

Joshi reiterated India’s commitment to balancing rapid economic growth with environmental protection, stating the nation is actively “working on developing a green economy.”
