Key Takeaways

  • India seeks collaboration with Israeli startups in cybersecurity, medical devices, and clean tech
  • Technology partnership will be a key element of proposed India-Israel trade agreement
  • Minister Goyal leads 60-member delegation for bilateral trade talks

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that India is exploring deep collaboration with Israeli startups to boost innovation ecosystems in both countries. The minister revealed this during his visit to Israel where he’s leading a 60-member business delegation for bilateral trade talks.

Technology Focus in Proposed Trade Deal

Goyal stated that technology and innovation collaboration will be a central element of the proposed trade agreement between India and Israel. “We can collaborate with Israel to promote our own startup ecosystem,” Goyal told reporters, emphasizing India’s aspiration to reach deep tech and high-quality innovation levels at competitive prices.

The minister highlighted Israel’s remarkable startup density, noting the country has “one startup with every 1,000 people.” He praised Israel’s ability to convert adversity into opportunity, particularly in agriculture, health technologies, and climate change solutions.

Strategic Areas for Collaboration

Goyal identified several key areas where Indian and Israeli startups can work together:

  • Cybersecurity and digital protection
  • Mobility solutions and transportation tech
  • Green steel production with reduced carbon emissions
  • Medical technology devices and healthcare innovation

“There is a lot of interest here to work with Indian startups as the country provides scale and opportunities for the future,” Goyal noted during his discussions.

Building Startup Bridges

The collaboration assumes significance as India aims to become the startup capital of the world in the coming years. Goyal revealed that the two countries are considering establishing a formal “startup bridge” to facilitate deeper partnerships between their innovation ecosystems.

The minister is holding bilateral trade discussions with his Israeli counterpart Nir Barkat during the visit, focusing on strengthening economic ties through technology exchange and startup cooperation.
