GST Collections Rise 4.6% to ₹1.95 Lakh Crore in October 2025

GST Collections Show Robust Growth in October 2025

India’s GST revenue continued its upward trend with collections reaching ₹1.95 lakh crore in October 2025, marking a 4.6% increase compared to the same month last year, according to official data released on Saturday.

Key Highlights

  • October GST collections: ₹1.95 lakh crore (4.6% YoY growth)
  • April-October 2025-26 cumulative: ₹13.89 lakh crore (9% growth)
  • Record annual collection in 2024-25: ₹22.08 lakh crore
  • Average monthly collection hits all-time high of ₹1.84 lakh crore

Component-wise Performance

In October, Central GST (CGST), State GST (SGST), and Integrated GST (IGST) all registered year-on-year increases, while cess collections showed a decline. The same pattern was observed in the cumulative April-October period.

Historical Growth Trajectory

GST collections have demonstrated consistent growth since the tax system’s implementation in 2017. The figures show remarkable progress:

  • 2020-21: ₹11.37 lakh crore
  • 2023-24: ₹20.18 lakh crore
  • 2024-25: ₹22.08 lakh crore (record high)

This steady increase reflects stronger economic activity and improved tax compliance across sectors.

GST Council’s Reform Initiatives

The GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister and comprising state finance ministers, has been instrumental in streamlining the tax system. Since its formation in 2016, the Council has held 55 meetings, implementing numerous business-friendly reforms.

In a landmark decision during its 56th meeting, the Council simplified the GST structure from four tax slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) to two main rates:

  • 5% merit rate for essential goods
  • 18% standard rate for most items
  • 40% special rate for sin and luxury goods

These changes, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech and implemented on September 22 (the first day of Navratri), aim to reduce the tax burden on citizens while stimulating economic growth.
