Google and Adani Partner on $15 Billion AI Hub in Visakhapatnam

Google has announced a landmark $15 billion partnership with Adani Enterprises to build India’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This will be Google’s largest AI centre outside the United States.

Key Takeaways

  • $15 billion investment spread over 2026-30
  • 1 GW data centre campus with AI infrastructure
  • Google’s first AI hub in India and largest outside US
  • Expected to generate $15 billion in US GDP

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed he discussed the project with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating it will “bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country.”

Project Details and Timeline

The $15 billion (approximately ₹1.3 lakh crore) investment will be deployed over five years from 2026-2030. The project aligns with the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and is expected to significantly boost US GDP through increased economic activity and cloud adoption.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu called it “a new chapter in India’s digital transformation journey” and expressed pride in hosting “India’s first truly gigawatt-scale data centre and Google’s first AI hub in India.”

Infrastructure and Capabilities

The Visakhapatnam AI hub will feature:

  • Purpose-built data centre campus with gigawatt-scale compute capacity
  • Cutting-edge infrastructure powering Google Search, Workspace, and YouTube
  • Development partnerships with AdaniConneX and Airtel
  • New international subsea cable gateway on India’s eastern coast

The facility will deliver high-performance, low-latency services enabling businesses to build and scale AI-powered solutions, accelerating India’s position as a global AI leader.

Strategic Significance

The new subsea gateway will provide route diversity complementing existing cable landings in Mumbai and Chennai, enhancing India’s digital backbone resilience. Google emphasized the hub will be among its most energy-efficient data centres globally, with plans for new transmission lines, clean energy generation, and storage systems in Andhra Pradesh.

Gautam Adani’s Vision

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani stated they are “building the engine to power India’s AI revolution” through their joint venture. The facility will house TPU and GPU-based compute power for deep learning, neural network training, and large-scale AI model inference, creating solutions for critical sectors including healthcare, agriculture, logistics, and finance.

AdaniConneX, the 50:50 joint venture between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX, aims to build an environmentally conscious 1 GW data centre infrastructure platform, leveraging the strengths of both partners.
